| Grand Opening of Summer Camp Cafe |
On August 12, 2010, the seven to fourteen year old participants of Queens Community House’s (QCH) Camp Café played the roles of restaurant host, busboy, waiter, cashier, chef and manager and prepared and served snacks, lunch, desserts and beverages to QCH staff at the Grand Opening of Summer Camp Café. The opening was the culmination of several weeks of learning about nutrition, cooking, and the fundamentals of operating a restaurant. “By teaching creative eating early in life, our children are empowered to make healthier snack and meal choices during their teens and adulthood,” explains Jennifer Buffa, Summer Camp Director. Ms. Buffa altered the traditional summer camp model to incorporate nutrition and demonstrate and support healthy living to the children and their families. “This summer I learned a lot about nutrition and the five food groups. I probably eat healthier now that I know what’s actually in my food,” said 12 year old Jazlyn Rocco, one of the Counselors-In-Training. Besides gaining experience in the kitchen with youth-friendly cooking lessons, academic-based food challenges, children took part in athletics, performing arts, crafts, water activities and weekly themed field trips. “In my 15 years working at QCH, the Camp Café was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen at summer camp. From day one it was incredible, the kids actually got something out of it while having fun,” said Mike Zevon, Assistant Director of Teen Services. |
