Access for Young Women
Access for Young Women is a multi-dimensional leadership training program for young women ages 12 to 14, which focuses on gender equity and advocacy.
Groups meet after-school from January to May and are held at Queens Community House in Forest Hills.
AFYW is now in its 18th year of providing valuable leadership opportunities to young women residing in Queens. The program has demonstrated proven results in increasing girl’s self-esteem, academic performance, leadership skills, and knowledge of gender issues.
Meetings are held on Thursdays from 4-6pm. Workshops focus on leadership development, public speaking skills, communications skills, and advocacy skills. Complete applications must be emailed or dropped off in person before Friday, December 23rd at 5pm. Application available here.
Through weekly leadership groups, girls develop critical thinking skills and create workshops for peers on educational and social issues. Every year, the program culminates in a youth leadership conference.
Also, a special summer program, offered at the Forest Hills site, features a Summer Sights Photography Program which provides trips, arts, technology and career/college programming.
